SPEN (K) LIMITED COMPANY is an abbreviation for Services Provider Enterprises Network. The Services provider Enterprises SPEs are formalized youth-managed service providers based in the rural areas to provide extension services commercially.
SPEN services are specifically embedded on vibrant value chain per target region that allows for expansion into other sectors within agriculture.
Most of the SPEs supplement local extension services by supplying services and farm inputs along the dairy value chain. They are strategically positioned within their area by allocating their members into zones to become the next door solutions in fodder preservation, fodder establishment, dairy management, and supply of fodder seeds in addition to preservation materials. They have interest in horticulture value chain, Youth owned SACCO, biogas digester, livestock insurance, distribution of solar units, dealership with seed companies, organizing exchange visits and rain water harvesting.
The firm is projected to widen its scope and upgrade business systems across the regions to maximize the value of actors that is aimed at supplying standardized services and products to meet the increasing demand of quality agriculture input supplies.
SPEN is primarily established to bring the knowledge and skills from the institutions and disseminate to the small scale holders in agriculture to enhance their commercialization processes.
SPEN is a product of 2011 - 2012 National Agriculture and Livestock Extension Program (NALEP) through SNV - Netherlands Development Organization, a Dutch-based International Development Agency. The initial work of SPEN was based on the Dairy value chain .
The different Services Provider Enterprises established forms regional chapter and benefit and contribute to SPEN (K) Ltd for sustainability. SPEN (K) Ltd is answerable to SPEs and any major decision made is passed by each chapter in a group consensus. Each chapter monitors its own performance and standardized indicators outlining key performance indictors (KPI) across the board. Extension offices and officers have a comparative advantage in the market in soliciting for business contracts and making purchases from dealers.
